Cooper's Hawk

Not exactly what you want to see on your songbird feeder.

I was standing in the bedroom looking out the bay windows at the deer when this Cooper's Hawk landed. I carefully backed up to the dresser, grabbed my camera and managed to take 6 shots before he flew off. My previous experiences have been dismal in the photo department with hawks, so I was thrilled that I managed to get some and in focus too.

This is the first time I have seen their backside also. Always the front which is spotted. I've seen more juveniles than adults and they are spotted all over.

I love how the feet are in this photo! Plus you can see the spotted underside too.

Doing bookmarks are fun for me and gives me great ideas for more "serious" pieces.
Most of the original ones range in size from 2.5"-3" x 7"-8"
I always laminate for protection and add tassels
I also scan before laminating as the laminating sheets reflect light making the art hard to see.

Have three more almost done.

Too Wet, Too Windy!

With all the rain we have had the ground is soggy. Add high winds and trees will come down. Big ones. This one is at the side of our backyard. Took out two others on the way down. Was a big hardwood. Also behind it several yards another one is down. Further to the right a big Cedar came down too. It was too dark and raining to take photos of it.

This is the woods on the side of our house. Taken from the sunroom. You can see the root ball on the right center and the tree laying there through the center.

Just hoping none come down on the house. We certainly don't need anymore rain!

Gloomy Weather & More Computer Problems :(

This certainly has been a different winter from last year! 65 degrees on New Year's day with us being in light shirts outside working! Too warm actually this winter. Very little cold weather and so much rain the ground is like walking on a sponge. My bulbs are starting to come up and it's wayyyy to early as I know we will get another cold blast or two if not a long cold spell. In fact tomorrow it is suppose to be in the 40's during the day and 20's at night. Lovely after all this rain. I do hate driving on ice. I've posted some of our gloomy photos.

My computer has been back in the shop. All I will say is that Webroot AntiVirus sucks. Looking for another Virus protection software. May use what I have at work. No problems there.

My Dell printer has also died. After talking with "Chuck" from Dell I decided spending $200 to repair a printer that cost $98 is not a wise decision. Of course it's off warranty. Looking to buy an Epson as the quality on art prints is excellent. Right now the printer I have still scans so will wait until my tax refund to buy a new one.

But, the good note is, not being on the computer all the time has given me a chance to get a good head start on taxes and I have several pieces of art almost done :)

New ACEO and A Sick Computer

"A Cat of Different Colors"

I don't know where all these wild creatures are coming from, but this one is an ACEO (3.5" x 2.5") and is done with Acrylics on Acrylic paper. It was impossible to scan as the colors reflect light. You will find it listed on Etsy. Check the right-hand bar and you will see my Etsy store widget, click on Carpiss to go to the store.

My computer picked up a major virus last Sunday. Really pissed at Webroot antivirus which didn't catch the virus. It's a new version of the old System Security virus only updated and now called Win 7 Sec System. Fortunately I recognized it for what it was when it popped up on my screen and was able to prevent it from doing too much damage. Still, computer spent 4 days at my local geek and set me back listing on eBay and Etsy. Going to write Webroot a complaint and then change to the same antivirus I have at work which lassoed and corralled the virus before it could get started.

So be on the lookout for the new version of this virus and keep your systems updated!

New ACEO on Etsy~Horse of Different Colors

" A Horse of Different Colors"

ACEO (2.5" x 3.5") mixed medium.

I have several of these that I have been playing with in between my breaks from larger more "serious" pieces. This started out as a watercolor wash and India Ink painting with some prismacolor added in. Then I decided to use some of my archival, acid-free markers and then a spot of white acrylic for the eye and blaze. I had a lot of fun with this one and somewhere down the line will finish the others as well.

Remember that the colors sometimes look different on individual monitors!

Orphan. The part of hunting you don't hear about. Every year we have the orphans eating in our clearing from the woods. The twins and triplets do well as they have one another. Most times they take up with their family group. You always worry about the coyotes and dog packs, especially if they are a single as this one is.

This one tugged at the heart strings. Her mother had been an orphan also and had no family group to join up with. They stayed to themselves. This fawn was her first and was younger than the others. Logically you know the deer population is huge in this area. You see them crossing roads in front of you, or lying dead beside the roads from accidents. I just hate to see a young doe killed when there are so many older ones that are barren this year. We have 3 older females that are barren that visit our feeding station, one not doing well at all.

Fortunately this orphan has done well. She has taken up with the below Doe and her little buck although is still very independent. We see her a lot feeding in the back by herself. When the big crowds come in she will look for the Doe who protects her.

Hopefully she will escape the hunters also as she is young.

Today she was out in the back by herself. Very independent and growing up.

We have a large Canadian Geese population and the majority of them do not migrate. I know they are at the ponds on the farm year round.

We are fortunate to have a lot of Bucks around us and they frequent our backyard. Most won't come out until late evening when it's hard to photograph them decently. This fellow is the exception coming out early.

BlueJays, Dove, & Woodpeckers

I've always loved Blue Jays and we are lucky to have several visit our feeders.

The Red Bellied Woodpeckers are fun to watch as they land in the feeders and grab up nuts or suet balls.

We are overrun with Dove in our area. I Love the sound they make, unfortunately they can take over the feeders if you are not careful.

Definitely an unusual sight. Woodpeckers normally don't walk on the ground as their legs aren't suited for it. This one was hopping around looking for the peanuts I put out.

I was driving past a lovely old farm and noticed all the Canadian Geese on the bank of the pond. Wishing I had my big camera with me, I nevertheless managed to take a few shots with my pocket camera.

I love the reflections in the water.

I was amazed that my little camera was able to take photos of the Geese in the air.

This Buck is a nightly visitor to our yard. He is in a group of 6 Bucks of various ages and size.

The Buck on the right has 11 points on his rack. We only see him right before dark as he is very cautious and easily spooked. Unfortunately no real good photos of him.

He is less cautious and comes out when still some light to shoot by.

Half time at the Polo game we always bring the Friesians. They are a big crowd pleaser and it gives me a wonderful photo op with them all dressed up.

This female Cardinal spent some time bathing on a 100+ day. Normally they splash around quickly and leave, but she stayed long enough for me to get a number of photos of her.

Our Turkey chicks have all grown up! In all I was able to count close to 58 chicks that survived.

We had a female Raccoon with 2 kits. We didn't see them for several days and then as I was looking at the Turkey chicks I noticed masked faces in the middle of them eating. No Mother, she either died or was killed. Raccoons are not popular here, destroy birdfeeders, and can be rabid.

The two Kits spent several days glued to one another.

This is the littlest one.

In the late evening with yearling deer.

We haven't seen them in a week. Either something has happened to them or they have moved on. The mortality rate in kits are high.

Our backyard tends to be a "crash pad" for the wildlife. This fawn was laying here for some time as his mother and siblings were feeding.

This is one of the Bucks that frequent our yard. It's a little blurred, but I loved how tolerant he was of the fawn.

Our spell of cooler temperatures brought out playful fawns.

Caught this in the early morning hours out my bathroom window as I was getting ready for work.

We have a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers in the woods around our house, hear their wild sounding call frequently and occasionally will see a large flash of white on black as they fly through the woods and yard. Rarely I get to see one for any length of time so I was so pleased to be able to snap this photo out my bathroom window before he flew on.

The Raccoons are back. Fortunately they can't seem to get past the baffles on the bird feeders which is a good thing.

I was worried about the Owls after the tornado as I didn't hear them. But finally last Friday I heard them and upon looking found them in their favorite tree.

Little Thing thinks it's too hot in the window so has parked herself on my latest book. Afraid it may be a commentary on my choice of literature, or maybe just that I don't pay enough attention to her!

This Crow is already trying to cool itself off, normally a thing you see in late July or August. But it is 95 today, tying a record high. Oh joy, hope this isn't an indication of our Summer's weather.

These are some scans I was going to post before the tornado. This male here is gorgeous. I rarely can get this close but he was otherwise distracted :)

You'll find the males strut around in groups following the females wherever they go.

Always love the Turkeys at this time of year! Males strutting around indifferent, nonchalant females. Really is a sight.

Actually, the first time I saw the strutting males was at my Sister's house in El Dorado Hills, California. Semi-rural with wildlife everywhere. Lots of Turkeys strutting on the road. You could hear them quite distinctly. I was jazzed, my sister was unimpressed. "Oh, they are everywhere, have to be careful not to run one down in a curve". 16 years later I understand. They are everywhere here and in the Spring and the sounds of them pounding in our front and backyard are commonplace.

Our Cats & A Brief Thought on Tornadoes

On April 27th four tornadoes, two EF4's and two EF3's hit our area (Bradley County, TN) though out the course of the day. The damage was horrific. 300 homes destroyed, another 250 severely damaged and 9 people lost their lives. Power was out for almost 2 weeks County-wide, we were lucky to get ours back after 5 days. We were fortunate in that we had little damage, although the farm where the Friesians are was seriously damaged. Fortunately no horses, dogs or other animals were killed or injured.

I was going to post photos of which I have many, but decided against it. The photos show much of the damage, but really do not convey the complete devastation. So no photos. Just happy to still be alive.

My husband's annual trip to Wellington, Florida with the 4 Friesians. One of the few outings in the year where he puts the show harness on. Qwintus and Inke' are the leaders, Monk and Sil are the wheelers. Another shot of the 4. Your Leaders tend to be "brighter" than your wheelers. But I guess if I was looking at someone's hind end during work I wouldn't be "bright" either.

This is the 3rd deck the group has done so I was pleased to again be a part of it!

Snow Friesians & More

The snow that has hit the South the past two days has given the Boys something to play in.

Being born in a cold, snowy climate, the Friesians are not much bothered by the snow.

The South isn't used to this type of snowfall as our norm is 1-2" at most a winter.

But it has given us some beautiful photo opts.

Enterprising Woodpecker & Buck

It's always fun to watch the various Woodpeckers eat at the suet feeders.
This one has found a new way to feed without getting on the suet holder.

I had looked out the window and this Woodpecker was calmly eating from the thistle feeder for a good 10 minutes. Plenty of mad Finches waiting for him to leave!

Christmas Snow 2010

I was on my way to feed the cats at the Center where I work thinking that the weatherman missed the 1/2" prediction of snow. Already an inch on the ground and it was snowing hard. Roads were terrible and I was questioning my sanity being out on them. But on I went.
Starting to snow hard. Wet and sticking to everything, especially the roads.

Birds were in a feeding frenzy. Loads of Finches, Purple Finches, Tufted Titmouses, Chickadees, Woodpeckers.

The Turkeys came to visit. Counted 31 of them lined up in our backyard.

Beating a retreat to the woods.

Did I mention how hungry the birds were?

A very wet, very heavy snow. Thankfully no trees or power lines came down.

I think I made 4 trips out to fill up the feeders.

It snowed up until the late afternoon. We got somewhere in the range of 5 to 7 inches depending where you stuck your ruler. I know you people from the snow areas think 5 to 7 inches is nothing, but remember, this is the South!

Backyard feeders were busy too.

Made for beautiful photos. Many were thrilled with the White Christmas.

Now, make it go away. :)

Winter Solstice Sunset

One of the reasons I love Winter is that with the leaves off the trees I am able to see the Sun & Moon rise and set.

Of Squirrel Nests~

Every winter I spend a lot of time looking up at the tree tops and squirrel nests. It has always amazed me how high they build and even more amazing is the fact they rarely come down in bad weather, i.e. high winds and heavy rain. There are two in this photo, both high up.

Sometimes they just seem to be there anchored on thin branches swaying in the wind.

You probably think I'm nuts :)
